What I do.

I often get asked about what happens if your baby is unsettled during their photography session, so I thought it would be a good idea to write a little about it.

Parents often worry that their baby being unsettled will make it difficult to capture beautiful images. However, I pride myself on being completely baby-led, which means letting the baby run the show. I observe their behavior and reactions to understand what poses they are comfortable with and adjust accordingly. I always have a backup plan and a few simple poses in mind in case they don't like some of them.

Being baby-led also means having patience. Allowing plenty of time for your little one to feed, get changed, and just have a snuggle with mummy or daddy is vital in helping to keep them happy and settled.

To create a comfortable environment, I keep the studio space warm with heaters and use a white noise machine to emulate the cozy environment of the womb. Some babies also enjoy being swaddled, as it gives the comfort of being in the womb, so that's a handy trick if they are unsettled. Sometimes, babies just need snuggles with their parents, so if they are unsettled, I tend to switch it up and get the shots with parents. Once they drift off happily in their arms and fall into a deep sleep, we can move on to the solo baby shots.

It's crucial to inform me if your little one is struggling with any medical issues or if you have any concerns, as we may need to reschedule or choose certain poses that will keep them happy and comfortable.

Overall, it's very rare that I've had to reschedule newborn sessions. With all these tricks up my sleeve, I can usually help most babies settle down. However, on the odd occasion when they are just not feeling it or have had a rough night beforehand, rescheduling is always an option. The most important part of newborn photography to me is that your baby is happy, comfortable, and safe during their session.
